Alfred J. Davis

Alfred J. Davis has served as City Manager of Tuskegee, Alabama, since March 15, 2007, having been selected by Tuskegee City Council after a competitive search. As City Manager, Davis serves as the City's Chief Executive Officer. Davis also serves as Executive Director of the Tuskegee-Macon County Head Start.

Formerly, Davis was Director of Solid Waste Management for the City of Durham, North Carolina, managing Durham's multi-faceted Solid Waste Department with five divisions, approximately 150 employees, and a total departmental budget in excess of $25 million.

Prior to serving in Durham, Davis was Director of Environmental Services for the City of Auburn, Alabama, the first African American appointed to a department head position in Auburn. In addition to his Director of Environmental Services duties in Auburn, for a time Davis served as the Community Development Officer and Assistant to the Public Safety Director. He also served as the staff representative to the Auburn Planning Commission.

Davis' Public Administration career spans over 20 years, starting as a Program Analyst with the United States Department of Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C.

Alfred Davis was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but was reared by his grandmother in Montgomery, Alabama. He was educated in the Montgomery, Alabama public school system. Graduating from Robert E. Lee High School, he attended Auburn University in Montgomery, and received a Bachelor of Science Degree, majoring in English and History. He later received a Master's Degree in Political Science from Auburn University. He has taken numerous post graduate leadership and business management courses.

Davis has served as President of the Alabama Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America, President of the Alabama Animal Control Association, and Board Member of the Alabama Recycling Coalition. Davis has also served as the President of the Council of Presidents, Board Member of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators, and is a founder and former President of the East Central Alabama Chapter of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators. Davis has received numerous awards in recognition of professional achievements and community involvement.

Sponsored by the United States Aid to Developing Countries (US-AID), Davis has provided management training and public administration consultant services to several cities in Bulgaria. He has also served as a guest lecturer at numerous Universities and as an adjunct faculty member at Auburn University.

Davis is married to Nellie T. Davis. They have 2 children, Alfred Jr. and Daniel. Davis is an avid gardener and reader.
